Today's Range Report / What's on the Bench

Shot my carry guns today, well 3 out of four of them any ways.  I fear people don't practice enough, so I thought I might encourage you to do so based on my observations today.  I quit shooting IDPA and USPSA almost a year ago, with the exception of an occasional match just to keep my son humble.  I am no speed demon, and don't post any of this to prove one way or the other.

My personal view and goals in self defense practice.

  • Shoot the first rounds "cold" (no practice as if it was on the streets) with a Mozambique. Based on the premise that the average gunfight is 3 shots in 3 seconds at 3 feet.
  • Wear what I normally wear. including my bifocal glasses with safety glasses over them. My sights are fuzzy nubs in this situation, but it's what I wear daily.
  • Practice, mostly point shooting, from close retention, one armed bent and full extension two hands, and combinations of both.  Face fact folks, if you ever have to use the gun in self defense, it will be up close and personal, one hand keeping the bad guy away and one hand shooting.  (note... don't go point shooting until you have practiced it and know you are shooting safe, start out up close)
  • I try to shoot my carry guns once a month.
Today's observations and concerns.
  • Started wearing suspenders here last week and you would be amazed how much that can affect you purchase of the gun and presentation. I fired one shot (knowingly and safely) and the suspenders were in my firing grip. But if it should happen I know that I can. Dry fire with suspenders is in order.
  • Wore my regular over shirt, tank top underneath. there were times I lost .5 to .7 seconds as a result of clearing the garment in the wind.  With out a shot timer, you will never know this.
  • Played with my new mag design that I have been working  on and wearing for some time now. Really liked it...... fastest mag change was 1.7 ... I aint telling you the slowest. Again, can't know with out a shot timer.
  • First "cold shooting, 3 shots 3 feet ...... 2.6 seconds ... first shot today was pretty consistent at 1.25 ........ Here is hoping the bad guy is slower.
  • Shot in that vicinity with all 3 guns, M&P shield 45, M&P 4.25 9mm and a Taurus 5 shot revolver.  I think that fastest Mozambique's were just under 2 seconds, again I don't profess to be fast or a "standard" to reach..... I just want to be able to "get the job done" under 3 seconds (the more left over time the better).
  • I always back up for fun to see what can be done, I am aware of how far I can go with the other 2 guns, but the "belly gun" made it out to 60 yards on steel. So if a head shot is needed at 60 yards I am your guy, but it might take a few shots.
thats 50-60 yards to the steel next to the paper silhouette

Again..... the only reason I wrote all this is to encourage you to make sure that you know what you are able to do with that carry gun. While I hope the day never comes that you have to use your gun in self defense, don't wait till then to know what you can do,
